Student Body / Curriculum

Currently, SHS has an enrollment of 165 students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. The parish is committed to providing a solid financial base for the school program each year by subsidizing about 20% of the annual school budget. The balance of the budget is met by tuition and fundraising. Students in grades 1-8 wear attractive uniforms that are purchased locally. Kindergarten students have a dress code; uniforms are not required.

The school curriculum is continuously updated. Teachers meet on a regular basis to discuss and coordinate their various programs. Basic curriculum areas include Religion, Reading, Math, Social Studies (History, Geography, World Cultures), Language Arts, and Lab oriented Science. In addition, special classes are offered in Computer Science, Physical Education, Art, and Music. The average pupil/teacher ratio is 18-1. The teaching of Religion is fundamental to the school's purpose. All grades receive regular religious instruction. Sacramental Programs are offered in second grade to prepare students for the reception of First Penance (Reconciliation) and First Holy Communion. Students plan and attend Holy Mass on the first Friday of each month and all Holy Days that occur on school days. Students are taught about the Church year and participate in related activities, especially during Advent, Lent and the Easter season. They also become involved in Christian volunteer service activities. Non-Catholic students also participate in religion classes, attend Mass, and other liturgical celebrations.

The Science curriculum is well rounded. Students in Grades 5-8 learn the scientific method and use the well equipped Science Lab to experience and reinforce the concepts learned in the classroom. Students in the lower grades also use the lab equipment for classroom experiments. Many of Sacred Heart graduates have gone on to major in and have pursued careers in Science. They have testified to the solid foundation they received at Sacred Heart. Kindergarten through Grade Four are self-contained classes. Grades Five through Eight are departmentalized. There is computer instruction at every grade level and all of the students have an opportunity to work in the computer room on a weekly basis.

Classrooms are equipped with PC's that are available for student use. The computer lab has 24 networked Pentium computers with excellent educational software and a DSL Internet connection.
