School Facts

Sacred Heart School is a parochial school in the Diocese of Norwich. It is located in the Taftville section of Norwich, Connecticut. Sacred Heart is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the State of Connecticut. The school was founded in 1888 to provide a Catholic education for the children of textile mill workers drawn to the area in search of jobs. Through the years the school has retained its original identity as a parish school and has enjoyed the unwavering support of the parish community. Currently, about half the students attending Sacred Heart are members of Sacred Heart Parish. Many students are bussed from the greater Norwich Area; bussing from Norwich is free. Many commute from surrounding towns that do not have a Catholic school. The parent or guardian must provide transportation from out of town. Usually car pools can be arranged to meet the need.  Sacred Heart School provides bus transportation from Colchester, CT at nominal cost to provide for the large number of students attending from that area.

The school is centrally located and easily accessible from I-395, and Routes 169, 97, and 12. Currently there are students attending from Lisbon, Oakdale, Bozrah, East Lyme, Canterbury, Baltic, Jewett City, Groton, Gales Ferry, Voluntown, Moosup, Ledyard, Lebanon, Mystic, and a large contingent from Colchester.

The Sacred Heart School Board is composed of nine members. The Board meets once a month and advises the pastor and the principal regarding school policy, programs, and finances. The pastor and principal are ex-officio members of the School Board.

The faculty is experienced, qualified, and certified to teach. The entire faculty and support staff of Sacred Heart are committed and dedicated Christians who provide a witness to the teachings of the Gospel. Christian behavior and attitudes are expected from all staff and students. Parents are encouraged to support this effort at home and in their community. Most families that attend the school are Catholic and are active members of a Catholic parish. Non-practicing Catholics and non-Catholics are admitted when space is available. The tuition rate varies according to parish affiliation and the number of children from the family attending Sacred Heart School. Specific information can be obtained in the tuition section of this web site www.sacredhearttaftville.org or by contacting the school.

The Sacred Heart Home and School Association is a very active and involved group of parents. They sponsor important fundraising and child-oriented fun-raising events. This hardworking group provides the school with many resources necessary to maintain an excellent educational environment.
